Anyone can always save money on cutting back on what they spend for holidays and gifts year-round. Research has revealed that when it comes to building lasting happiness, giving material gifts are always trumped by making memorable experiences. Also, spending time with family and friends is priceless. I have found a great way to celebrate all holidays with something everyone love-wine.
The Best Things in Life Are Free Gifts
It is so easy to yield to the materialistic tendencies year-round for the need to purchase a gift for someone or some occasion. Regardless of how spiritual, mindful, and well-intentioned you may be. If you ask anyone what they would like for a truly lasting gift the answer would be to be acknowledged and loved. Everyone wants to feel special, children just want to make their parents proud, and spouses want to know the love is still there regardless of what life sends your way.
“People will never forget how you made them feel,” said the wise sage Maya Angelou. A good laugh, a hand-written gratitude letter, a thrilling solo day trip, or a cookie-baking session—when executed with love—can be the most valuable gifts on earth. I will never forget that shortly after my husband and I were married my beautiful mother-in-law sent me a beautiful hand-written letter welcoming me to the family. Words cannot express the overwhelming love and gratitude I felt upon receiving and reading the letter. It is one of my most prized possessions to this day.
Scour Secondhand Items
Anyone can take secondhand furniture and items and breathe new life into them with new paint, fabric, or just a new purpose for the item. Do not shy away for flea markets, thrift shops, antique shops, and estate sales. There are plenty of places to find old items that you can give new life as a gift. And if you have a good eye, some amazing deals can be found. Also, remember one person’s trash maybe be another person’s treasure.
I love white dishes and serving pieces, but always cannot find what I want or in the price range I am willing to pay. You can never go wrong with white dishes. They are always beautiful, classic, and versatile. What a great base set that you can always accent with colorful accommodating pieces. White is just simple, and I personally think food looks more elegant and appetizing on a white background. Did you know that interior designers, cookbook authors, and food stylists choose white dishes because of their timelessness and versatility?
You can paint thrift store finds with paint that is dish washer safe and that you can use daily. I found a serving piece at a thrift store and painted it white and can use it for a planter or many other ways.
Think Sentimental
Most all people are sentimental to a point. Just try to remember what your family and friends talked about are some shared favorite memories with them. Then put on your thinking cap to find memorabilia, mementos and other symbolic items that represent those memories. Your goal is to trade sentimental value for actual monetary worth, and relatively obscure items that do not mean much to most people yet can often be had on the cheap.
One example is the original ticket stub from the movie your parents saw on their first date or even from your first date and then just frame it. Do not forget to add a great quote from the movie. I know one Valentine’s Day at church they had a game for married couples at the time my husband and I were chosen as the most recent married couple for the game. We won the grand prize, which was a gift card for a movie and snacks. The movie we saw was “Happy Feet” a movie about a penguin that could not sing, but dance and found his soul mate. I saved the tickets and other memorabilia into a frame.
